"Science and Religion"

Due to different approaches to fundamental subjects of life science and religion have clashed numerous times throughout history. Ao. Univ.-Prof. Mag. DDr. Winfried Löffler, lector at the Leopold Franzens University Innsbruck, will be talking about this thrilling topic. He himself was already interested in science since a young age and has conserved this throughout his study of theology and philosophy. Aside from his teaching at the School of Catholic Theology of Innsbruck he is also teaching logic and philosophy of science and religion at the Faculty of Biology. Furthermore he is the chairman of the Austrian Society of Philosophy of Religion (ÖGRPh) and author of several books.

Simon Albertini, BSc

"A Brief History of Chemistry and the Elements"

The history of chemistry itself is more or less part of the education which an average student has to bear with. However, if I say history I have in mind the dropping of names, dates or the citation of breakthrough discoveries. Therefore it does not come without surprise that the average chemistry student knows fairly little about the development that chemistry ran through in the last few centuries. Simon Albertini will change this with pleasure. He will take us on a journey through the major mysteries and obscure history of the fascinating subject chemistry. Simon grew up in Landeck and finished his basic education in chemistry at the University of Innsbruck. Since his second year at university he has attended teacher training in the subjects of chemistry and German. After he finished his Bachelor in chemistry in 2012 he went abroad to South Korea for half a year. As soon as he returned he began the Master program in chemistry and not half a year later the Bachelor program in molecular medicine. Furthermore, he was actively engaged in the students council since 2011 until this year and is since 2013 involved in the young chemists network of Austria in either a lead or motivated role. In his spare time he enjoys the advantages of the geographical position of Tirol, relishes the vastness of German and Japanese literature or spends time with friends, travelling or both.

Jean-Christophe Noel, BSc

"Do you know about dough? The principles of bread making"

As an analytical chemist Jean-Christope Noel does not stop his investigations at the crust. In fact, he takes a closer look at the crumb of a scientific subject. With his experience in gastronomy and food chemistry gathered at Konditorei Peintner and AGES Innsbruck he presents the audience a hunk of facts about bread, pie and pastry. With a slice of chemistry as a side.

Careers in Concept (Tuesday, September 22nd 2015)

Mag. Dr. Karl Schwaha

"A Manager's Career"

Mag. Dr. Karl Schwaha studied chemistry, precisely physical chemistry, at the University of Innsbruck and did a post-doc at the Universities of Innsbruck and Cambridge. After his time in academia he worked for seven years as an engineer in the metal industry before being promoted to head of department. A few short steps later on the ladder of success he was the head of business unit and later member of the board at VAI (later VAI Metals Technologies). Up until now Mag. Dr. Karl Schwaha has been member of seven different boards and chairman of four. At the moment he is an independet management consultant and vice rector of infrastructure at the University of Vienna. With this rich experience he will present the exciting profession of a manager to us.

Dr. Barbara Enders

"Working and Being Mother"

Dr. Barbara Enders studied chemistry at the LFU Innsbruck and finished her PhD thesis in 2008 at Prof. Dr. Micura's Lab (Institut of Organic Chemistry). Subsequently, she pursued postdoctoral studies in the group of Prof. Dr. Dumas at the University of Strasbourg before she returned to the University of Innsbruck in the position of a senior lecturer and postdoctoral researcher in the group of Prof. Dr. Kräutler. In 2012, however, she decided to start a new career: being mother. During maternity and by now also parallel to employment, she has attended classes to become a biology and chemistry teacher. Since 2013 she has been teaching first at the HAK Hall and now at the KORG Innsbruck. In her talk Dr. Enders describes how being mother, student and teacher works at the same time.

Dr. Anette Foelske-Schmitz

"A Researcher's Career"

Dr. Foelske-Schmitz studied chemistry at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and completed her PhD under supervision of Prof. Hans-Henning Strehblow in the area of electrochemically prepared oxide layer formation on cobalt electrodes. Then, continuing her research career, she worked as senior scientist at the Electrochemistry Laboratory at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Villigen (Switzerland) in the group of Dr. Rüdiger Kötz focusing on surface and interface analysis. Since July 2014, Dr. Foelske-Schmitz is head of the newly founded Analytical Instrumentation Center (AIC) at the University of Technology in Vienna (TUW), which is subjected to the vice-rectorship of research and pools local expertise in complementary fields of analytical chemistry.

Dr. Werner Stadlmayr

Abb.: Werner Stadlmayr

"A Lecturer's Career"

Dr. Werner Stadlmayr was born and is still living and working in Innsbruck. He received his Ph.D. equivalent academic title - Doktor rerum naturalium - at the Institute of Physical Chemistry at the University of Innsbruck. At present he works as lector at the Management Center Innsbruck (MCI). His work includes also the management of the Department of Mathematics and Physics and research in the field of hydrothermal carbonisation, in which he applies the methods of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Furthermore he is involved in industrial cooperation with the aim of process optimization and deposition of mercury from the remnants of dental treatments. He likes to unwind from work by reading the German literary classics, reflecting about central philosophic questions and their possible impact on the daily life of today's scientists. He also likes to discuss these questions in the presence of good friends or to clear his mind in the depths of video games, may it be classics or brand new releases.

Dr. Helmuth Wachtler

Abb.: Helmuth Wachtler

"A Teacher's Career"

Dr. Wachtler did his chemistry studies at the University of Innbruck in Prof. Dr. Paul Peringer's Lab at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry. Already during his PhD he taught chemistry, computer sciences and ethics at the BRG/BORG Landeck. Since 2010 he has been teaching at the BG/BRG Innsbruck - Sillgasse. Additionally, he has been deployed as coordinator of chemistry at the PHT in 2011 and leads the ARGE Chemie since 2012.
