Together, we will get to know where microorganisms and enzymes do their work at home. Without biotechnology the production of pickled cabbage, vanilla sugar, or beer would be unimaginable. Why do we need bacteria, yeast and fungi for the recycling of plastic and how do they get into the gas tank of our cars? These questions and many other examples will be presented by Dr. Matthias Slatner from acib. After a short introduction into the world of microorganisms, biotechnological processes in the kitchen, cellar, recycling and our everyday life will be discussed. The Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (acib) is an internationally active biotech research institution with the vision to replace traditional industrial technologies with new economically beneficial and ecologically friendly methods. The company’s milestones include finding the responsible transport gene that allows the production of citric acid in large quantities and the development of a new platform that promises faster, more economic and safer production of modern pharmaceuticals – from gene therapies for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s, to cancer therapy and modern preventive vaccines against influenza and HIV. Together with the University of Innsbruck and BOKU Vienna, scientists from acib developed a revolutionary platform technology, enabling a faster search and production of potential SARS-CoV-2 drugs in large quantities as well as providing efficient antibody tests.
